The idea
Europe lives a situation of coexistence among several and different ethnic and cultural people, that sometimes live together in peace without problems, but sometimes create conflicts and frictions. So cultural differences, that are to be considered as an obvious richness, sometimes become a problem.
The enlargement process in the European Union is, on one side, an extraordinary opportunity to increase cultural richness and diversity in the European countries, and, on the other side, requires policies and approaches based on the intercultural dialogue.
The role of mass media, in such a framework, is very important. Media can give voice to all the European civil society involved in the promotion of multicultural and peaceful issues. Media have the responsibility to produce knowledge, to create relationships among the different communities. Some media always try to pursue that kind of approach. They are the so-called “multicultural media”, that overall in Europe product multicultural and multilingual programmes. They provide information services for minorities and migrant communities in their own territories and promote peaceful coexistence and multicultural exchange among the several communities. Multicultural media are also connected and linked, and try to organize networks for their common activities.
RECORD, starting from the different realities in three big European cities, Budapest, Florence and Rome, aims to create links and partnership among the public institutions, the civil society and the multicultural media, each of them involved in the promotion of interculturalism overall Europe.
